2016 Founders Day Award Presented
Mr. James L. Marshall was presented with the 2016 Founders’ Day Award on November 4. The annual Founders’ Day luncheon is an opportunity to pay tribute to those persons of vision who have supported and enhanced the ministry of the Foundation.
In this photograph, Mr. James Marshall (on the left) is presented with the Founders’ Day Award plaque by UM Foundation Board Vice Chair Mr. Thomas Heisey.
Jim Marshall is a member of Grace United Methodist Church in Warren, PA and a member of its Board of Trustees. He has served tirelessly as the Chair of the Church’s Endowment Committee for many years. In this role, he has faithfully promoted a philosophy of Christian stewardship and sound financial management that has made it possible for Grace UMC to maintain multiple growing endowments and to establish a legacy of financial stability for future generations.
Mr. Marshall, a native of Western PA, became a member of Warren Grace UMC in 1953, attended Warren High School and West Virginia Wesleyan College where he earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Business Administration and Economics. He is well suited to the role of Endowment Committee Chair based on his experience in the finance industry over the years as Regional Vice President for Thomson and McKinnon and Branch Manager for Morgan Stanley. Jim also taught financial courses at the University of Baltimore.
When asked about how he has seen legacy giving and the financial management provided by the Endowment Committee make a difference at Grace UMC, Jim responded, “Sound financial management has allowed us to have a balanced budget, maintain the church, perform preventative maintenance and handle any emergencies that pop up without going to the congregation for a special-needs offering. As far as our legacy giving, we have been able to establish a quarter-million-dollar fund to be used for outreach projects. We do plan on developing a program for ‘The Gift that Keeps on Giving’ to add to these funds.”
It is because of Jim’s tireless service to Grace UMC and living the mission of the Foundation through his dedication to good financial stewardship and love for Jesus that he is a most worthy recipient of this prestigious recognition by the Foundation.
